SDCC SHPE – Pazzaz Outreach

In the 2012 fall semester, the San Diego City College (SDCC) SHPE Chapter worked together with Pazzaz, a non-profit organization with the goal of academically assisting elementary to middle school students. During monthly visits, SHPE members provided a series of hands-on experiments to introduce Pazzaz students to the exciting world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). In November, SHPE members used a “dry-ice bubble” experiment to have the students experience a chemical reaction. In December, SHPE members created a lava lamp by combining water with food coloring and baby oil. With this experiment students could appreciate the chemical property that does not allow water and oil to mix.
