2015 SHPE San Diego Scholarship Application Open!

Attention SHPE San Diego students! This year’s SHPE San Diego scholarship application period opens March 1st and closes March 31st at 11:59 pm.

If you are a San Diego SHPE collegiate or SHPE Jr. registered member, have at least a 3.0 G.P.A. and have been active in your SHPE chapter, apply today for the SHPE San Diego Scholarship! Scholarship award amounts range from $500 – $2500. Don’t forget that you must be present at the 33rd Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet on May 1st for scholarship eligibility.

2nd Annual “Posada” December 12th

You are invited to the Second Annual SHPE “Posada”. We’ve had a very active Academic Year so far with many accomplishments! In appreciation to all your hard work, SHPE San Diego invites you to celebrate the holiday season with SHPE professionals and our student chapter colleagues in a “Posada” style Christmas Party.
Posada 2014 InvitationThe event will be a potluck, with the San Diego Professional Chapter providing Tamales, Rice and Beans. Professionals and guests please bring a main or side dish. University Students please bring desserts, and Junior College Students please bring drinks. There will be music, games, and a white elephant gift exchange (Max $10 gifts)!

October GBM @ Caltrans

On Tuesday, October 21st, Caltrans will be hosting our general body meeting at their District 11 Office located in Old Town San Diego. Caltran’s Mario Orso (Trade Corridor Project Director) will be presenting the planned State Route 11/Otay Mesa Port of Entry project and speaking about other border projects. Additionally, Bruce Urquhart (District Division Chief of Land Surveys) will be providing an overview on how to become a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of California.

About Mario Orso
Mario Orso was appointed in September 2008 as the Corridor Project Director for the Trade Corridor projects for the San Diego County Region of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans, District 11). He is responsible for delivery of the District’s Trade Corridor Improvement Fund (TCIF) projects, valued at more than $1 billion, which includes the new East Otay Mesa Land Port of Entry and associated State Route 11. He leads a team comprised of Caltrans and San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) staff members. This multi-disciplinary border project development team is planning a border crossing that is considered to be an innovative pilot project on the US/Mexican Border; it will feature a variable tolling system, advanced traveler information systems and will jointly planned and financed by US and Mexico. Mario had 23 years of experience and is a registered Professional Engineer. He graduated from San Diego State University.

About Bruce Urquhart
Bruce Urquhart, Professional Land Surveyor, has over 35 years of experience in the land surveying and management disciplines. Currently, he is the Division Director for the Land Surveys and Right of Way Engineering Department, Caltrans District 11, San Diego. For the past 22 years, Mr. Urquhart has also been a part time faculty member at San Diego State University, teaching Surveying for Civil Engineers. He has also taught review classes for the surveying portion of the Professional Engineer Exam at UCSD Extension, and for the American Society for Civil Engineers, Younger Member Forum (YMF).

Mr. Urquhart earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography from San Diego State University in 1978 and joined Caltrans that same year as a student assistant in Transportation Planning. The following year he transferred to Surveys, and has spent the rest of his career as a working member of a survey crew; Party Chief; Field Surveys Supervisor; and, in 2006, was promoted to Division Director.

Update: Noche de Ciencias @ Jacobs Center

Noches de Ciencias (Family Science Night) is a national initiative from SHPE to promote knowledge and interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The goal of Noches de Ciencias is to inform K-12 students and their families about STEM education and college options through FREE interactive workshops and activities. Noche de Ciencias es un evento GRATIS y reconocido a nivel nacional que sirve para involucrar a la comunidad hispana en un ambiente divertido y relajado con actividades científicas y de ingeniería, y para promover el conocimiento de la universidad en un entorno bilingüe. El objetivo de la Noche de Ciencias es facilitar el acceso y el conocimiento de carreras en STEM (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas) con el fin de ampliar la participación de los hispanos a lo largo de todos los segmentos de la vía de la ciencia y la ingeniería.
