In the 2012 fall semester, the San Diego City College (SDCC) SHPE Chapter worked together with Pazzaz, a non-profit organization with the goal of academically assisting elementary to middle school students. During monthly visits, SHPE members provided a series of hands-on experiments to introduce Pazzaz students to the exciting world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). In November, SHPE members used a “dry-ice bubble” experiment to have the students experience a chemical reaction. In December, SHPE members created a lava lamp by combining water with food coloring and baby oil. With this experiment students could appreciate the chemical property that does not allow water and oil to mix.
SDCC SHPE will continue working with Pazzaz during the 2013 spring semester. Volunteers and sponsors for SDCC SHPE activities are always welcome. For more information, please contact the SHPE City College Chapter at [email protected].
