In the 2012 fall semester, the San Diego City College (SDCC) SHPE Chapter worked together with Pazzaz, a non-profit organization with the goal of academically assisting elementary to middle school students. During monthly visits, SHPE members provided a series of hands-on experiments to introduce Pazzaz students to the exciting world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). SHPE San Diego is proud to shine a spotlight on one of our very own professional members, Viry Martino. A SHPE member since college, Viry held a two year internship with Turner Construction. Upon her graduation Viry was hired full time with Turner Construction in Los Angeles as a project engineer. On December 14, 2012 a group of SHPE and SWE students from San Diego City College hosted eight students from Garfield High school to Qualcomm in order to explore how STEM graduates can apply their knowledge to private industry careers. Expanding Your Horizons, San Diego is an organization that puts on a conference of the same name for girls in grades 6-10 to get them interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. They are having their first annual fundraising event this Thursday. SWC is working with the Puente Project to facilitating transfer and graduation of its community college students. One part of the program is connecting each student with a mentor for one semester (Spring). The time commitment is an average of 12-18 hours which includes: training, “Meet your Mentor” Dinner (scheduled for January 31st), and, our End of Year Celebration honoring our Mentors Dinner in May.
