City College Chapter – Garfield High School Outreach

The San Diego City College SHPE and SWE Chapters had the pleasure of collaborating with Garfield High School throughout the Fall 2012 semester.

On October 5th the chapter presented a “What is STEM?” workshop to a class of Garfield students. The workshop exposed the students to the exciting fields that STEM majors offer by giving a brief description of those majors and the careers, tools, and technologies they can expect.

Upon returning on November 2nd, we held a bridge building competition for the Garfield students. Groups of four to five students were paired and tasked with designing and building an efficient bridge given a set amount of materials. In the process students developed key skills necessary for STEM fields such as the importance of planning, critical thinking, and collaboration with others. The winning bridge was capable of holding 350 metal washers.

We plan to continue working with Garfield High School students for the rest of the academic year. If you are interested in learning more or interested in sponsoring some of our activities please contact the SHPE City College Chapter at [email protected].
