SDCC Hosts Garfield HS for Qualcomm Tour

On December 14, 2012 a group of SHPE and SWE students from San Diego City College
Qualcomm Tour Guide and Garfield Students - Getting ready for Qualcomm Tour hosted eight students from Garfield High school to Qualcomm in order to explore how STEM graduates can apply their knowledge to private industry careers.  Students got a first-hand tour of building M, where they participated in a tour of the manufacturing operations- from circuit board to cell phones.

Garfield Students Touring QualcommAfter the tour of building M, students toured the Qualcomm museum where they got to see and read about the how Qualcomm was involved with the evolution of technology over the past 30 years. Students enjoyed this trip, and returned to school excited about what they learned, and ready to continue with their education. We hope to repeat this tour with more students next semester!

City College Chapter – Garfield High School Outreach

The San Diego City College SHPE and SWE Chapters had the pleasure of collaborating with Garfield High School throughout the Fall 2012 semester.

On October 5th the chapter presented a “What is STEM?” workshop to a class of Garfield students. The workshop exposed the students to the exciting fields that STEM majors offer by giving a brief description of those majors and the careers, tools, and technologies they can expect.

Upon returning on November 2nd, we held a bridge building competition for the Garfield students. Groups of four to five students were paired and tasked with designing and building an efficient bridge given a set amount of materials. In the process students developed key skills necessary for STEM fields such as the importance of planning, critical thinking, and collaboration with others. The winning bridge was capable of holding 350 metal washers.

We plan to continue working with Garfield High School students for the rest of the academic year. If you are interested in learning more or interested in sponsoring some of our activities please contact the SHPE City College Chapter at [email protected].

SHPE SD Summer Beach Day

On Saturday, August 18th, the SHPE UCSD hosted a SHPE Summer Beach Day at beautiful Mission Beach in an effort to further bring together the students and professionals. Professionals and students from UCSD and City College showed up and had some fun in the sun.
Summer Beach DayFrom 12pm to 5pm student and professional members enjoyed an array of activities including boogie boarding and friendly games of Frisbee, volleyball, and soccer. There was plenty of talking and socializing amongst the younger and older member with people sharing past experiences and offering advice. Of course for lunch some delicious Tortas were prepared along with fresh fruit and refreshments as snacks available all day. At a short debrief near the end of the day possibilities for future joint-chapter events and things we could do to get an even greater member attendance to such events were discussed. Overall, this beach day was a good start to many more joint-chapter events yet to come.
